Flies in February usually mean you have Cluster Flies. Especially if flies seem to be coming from the loft area but they can come fro any cavity. They will use the cavity for hibernation purposes. They will not be breeding or feeding but hibernating. Harlequin LadybirdsHarlequin Ladybirds may also be hibernating along with the Cluster Flies.

Once a hibernation site has been chosen you will always get some flies hibernating there. How many depends of the success of any pest control treatments as well as how successful the flies were breeding throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn. They have genetic memory where even though they have never seen or been to the hibernation site that there parents or great grandparents hibernated in, they go to hibernate at the same site. Before humans arrived on the planet and started building houses, these Cluster Flies and Harlequin Ladybirds would use caves or hollow trees as hibernation sites. Now humans have erected so many buildings these insects have as many sites as needed. This may artificial boost the population.
