About Swindon
Swindon is a large town in Wiltshire. With Bristol 35 miles to the West and Reading to the East the same distance.
The town development act of 1952 led to a major increase in the population.
The original Anglo-Saxon settlement sat atop a limestone hill and is referred to in the Domesday Book as Suindune, deriving from the Old English for swine and hill.
After the Norman Conquest, Swindon was given to Wadard a knight in the service of the brother of King William the Conqueror.
Swindon was a small market town mainly for barter trade until about 1848. The area is on top of the hill now known as Old Town.
The Industrial Revolution caused the acceleration of population growth in Swindon, starting with the construction of the Wilts and Berks Canal in 1810 and then the North Wilts Canal in 1819. These canals brought trade to the area.
