Steam/Heat Treatments for Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are one of the hardest pests to get rid of. They can withstand very cold temperatures, survive fumigation with CO2 and sticky traps don’t eliminate them.

Extreme heat kills bed bugs instantly. It’s one of the most effective treatments to eliminate bed bugs. Most of the bed bugs are killed immediately, however, we recommend following the treatment with an insecticide spray to pick up those bugs which weren’t reached or which hatched after the treatment.

What steam/heat treatments do Pest UK offer?

Steam treatment

Steam is applied under pressure to the walls, ceilings, carpets, bed frame, mattress, furniture and surrounding areas where bed bugs may crawl and live.

Full heat treatment

The room being treated is sealed and its temperature raised and maintained at that level for several hours.

However, treatments will only work if the correct preparation and aftercare is carried out.

What preparation do you need to make prior to treatment?

Before we come out to treat your property the following needs to be done

  • All items of bedding need to be put through a hot water wash followed by a hot dry cycle.
  • Carpets and curtains must be cleaned/vacuumed.
  • Mattresses need vacuuming with a special filter to trap the bed bugs and prevent them from escaping. If mattresses have buttons, then vacuuming must be done around every button.
  • Headboards need to be removed and every crack in the bed frame vacuumed.
  • Divan bases need to be opened and every crack and piece of wood vacuumed.
  • Drawers and wardrobes must be emptied and every crack vacuumed. Clothes can only be re-introduced to the rooms once they have been washed.
  • Clear all clutter (toys, books, boxes, DVDs, posters, shoes etc.) Don’t put them into other rooms as you may spread the infestation. Items that cannot be either washed, tumble dried or sprayed with insecticide must be put in a freezer overnight before returning them to the treated room.

What do you need to do after treatment?

  • The treated room must be slept in continuously to encourage the bed bugs to crawl over the treated surfaces.
  • Insecticides last up to 2-months on surfaces and carpets so do not wash, vacuum or clean them.
  • Untreated objects and furniture removed from a treated room shouldn’t be put back for at least 5-months as the bugs can lay dormant for this time.

Be prepared to see some bed bugs for up to 2-weeks after the treatment. If you see bed bugs after this time then another spray may be necessary.
