About Harrow

The London Borough of Harrow is to the northwest of London, bordering Hertfordshire to the north, Hillingdon to the west and Ealing to the south. The suburban town Harrow is also home to the administrative offices of the borough itself as well as being a commercial hub with 2 shopping centres, over 300 metres of fully pedestrianised shopping roads north of St Ann’s.

The Harrow Urban District was formed in 1934 as an urban district of middlesex as a merger of the former areas- Harrow on the Hill urban District, Hendon Rural District and Wealdstone Urban District. In 1954 the district gained status as a municipal borough, the urban district council also became Harrow Borough Council. In 1965 the municipal borough was abolished and the former area was transferred to Greater London from Middlesex under the London Government Act 1963 to form the London Borough of Harrow.

Harrow is a diverse borough with 63.8% of its population from the BME communities, the largest group being of Indian ethnicity. the borough also has the largest concentration of Sri Lankan Tamils in the UK. Harrow is also the most religiously diverse local authority in the UK, as part of a 2011 census Harrow has a larger than average Hindu, Jewish and Muslim population.

Harrow is home to a University of Westminster campus and Harrow School, founded in 1572 by John Lyon under a royal charter of Elizabeth I and is one of the original seven public schools that were regulated by the Public Schools Act 1868. Former pupils include Robert Peel, Winston Churchill and the first prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru.
