About Newbury

Newbury is a historic market town in the West of Berkshire. Located in the valley of the River Kennet 20 miles west of Reading, 26 miles south of Oxford and 27 miles south of Swindon. Newbury has its own civil parish led by a town council and is also the administrative headquarters of West Berkshire Council. The town spans both sides of the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal,
there is a large market square spread in its centre. Newbury is famous for its racecourse, which has recently been redeveloped with new housing and a hotel.

In the surrounding area there are many horse race trainers as well as Highclere and Donnington Castle. PEST UK have pest control contracts at several of these training stables, including Clare Balding’s stables.

Newbury was formed in the late 11th century after the Norman invasion. The cloth trade played an important part of Newbury’s wealth. There were two battles nearby in the Civil War. The importance of Newbury was increased with the popularity of Bath in the 18th century as travellers on the way there from London would stop in Newbury.

Newbury is home to one of England’s major racecourses Newbury Racecourse which celebrated its centenary in 2005. Normally taking place in November is the famous Hennessy Gold Cup. The racecourse also provides a musical venue for some large acts set to a theme, such as Ladies Day.

Newbury was home to A.F.C. Newbury who were sponsored by Vodafone, but after sponsorship was withdrawn in May 2006 the club soon after collapsed. A local pub team from the Old London Apprentice now competes in the Reading League as Newbury F.C.

Victoria Park, near the town centre is used for several events throughout the year such as the Newbury Waterways Festival, the Keep Off The Grass dance music event and the Crafty Craft race, where people and teams compete with improvised raft racing along the canal.
