About Farnborough

Farnborough is a large town in north east Hampshire, 16-miles east of Basingstoke and close to the Surrey border. It was founded in Saxon times and is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

The St Michael’s Abbey is a Benedictive abbey was founded in 1881 by Napoleon III’s wife, the Empress Eugénie as a mausoleum for her husband and son. Eugénie was later buried alongside her husband and son and all three rest in a granite sarcophagi provided by Queen Victoria. The monks live a traditional life of prayer, work and study according to the Rule of St Benedict. They earn their living through printing, publishing, bookbinding, and the Abbey Shop is an important part of the monastery’s income and is open to visitors.

Farnborough is best known for its illustrious aviation history and pioneering work in aerodynamics, from the first powered flight in Britain in 1908 to the first car to go supersonic on land in 1997. A list of the scientists and engineers who have worked at Farnborough reads like a Who’s Who of British aeronautical science.
Farnborough Airfield is the site of the historic Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE). Two of the old RAE, Farnborough’s historic wind tunnels are now listed buildings, the first built in 1917 and the other, much larger, in 1935. The latter was used extensively for research into Concorde’s aerodynamics, and later that of Formula 1 cars, until its closure in the early 1990s.

At the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) Museum, you can explore a fascinating collection of aircraft, equipment, machinery, photographs and films from Farnborough’s illustrious aviation history.

The biennial Farnborough International Airshow is a trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries, where civilian and military aircraft are demonstrated to potential customers and investors. Since its first show in 1948, Farnborough has seen the debut of many famous planes, including the Vickers VC10, Concorde, the Eurofighter, the Airbus A380, and the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. At the 1958 show, the RAF’s Black Arrows executed a 22-plane formation loop, setting a world record.

For decades, the Airshow has been the most important global platform for the aerospace, aviation, and defence industry. The 2018 Farnborough International Airshow, saw deals worth $192 billion made, the show is propelling itself to new heights. In 2022 airshow will be unveiling a new revolutionary global initiative – the inaugural Aerospace Global Forum. A ground-breaking dimension to Farnborough the platform will provide global leaders with the opportunity to gather, discuss and interrogate major issues impacting the world through an aerospace lens and drive positive change.
