About Ware
Ware is a town in Hertfordshire, close to the county town of Hertford.
A large viaduct runs over the River Lea at Kings Meads.
Ware has been occupied since the Mesolithic period, which ended around 4000 BC. The Roman Empire had a sizeable settlement here and foundations of several buildings have been found. The modern name of the town heralds back to the Anglo-Saxon period where weirs were built to stop invading Vikings from escaping after defeat by Alfred the Great.
In the 17th Century Ware became the source of the New River, constructed to provide fresh water for London from the River Lea and from Chadwell Springs. There are regular rail services between Ware railway station and London Liverpool Street.
