July so far has been the busiest month we have ever experienced with over 1500 jobs taken, the vast majority of these were wasp nests. August has slowed down, mainly due to the weather. The wetter colder weather we have had in August this year has meant that people are less likely to be in their gardens and so come into less contact with wasps or don’t notice the nests. There are still plenty of wasp nests to come in the next few months. The Spring weather in 2015 was sunny but not particularly warm which meant the nests in the early stages were slow developing. This means that many nests will carry on functioning well into November if the weather is warm enough. Cold weather will slow the metabolisms of wasps but this means they live longer and this can affect the lifespan of the whole nest. Hot Summers can mean the wasps burn out earlier as well as wasting energy collecting water to cool the nest as well as fanning the nest at night to keep the nest cool. The 2 main wasp species in the UK are the Common Wasp and the German Wasp and these species are found as far north as Scandinavia, they prefer average British temperate climate. They are not suited to very hot Summers but it is hot Summers when people will see them mostly.
