Will a wasp nest die out if I leave it untreated?

Will a wasp nest die out if I leave it untreated? Eventually in time, yes a wasp nest will die out on its own. Before a nest dies, it can produce up to 100 new queens. These queens will then hibernate over winter ready to make their own nests in the following year.

Nests will become larger until autumn. By then the workers will have finished the maintenance of the nest and feeding of grubs. This is when they could become aggressive and more likely to sting people. They will switch to feeding on rotting fruit which makes them drunk. Wasps do good by feeding on flies, caterpillars and other insects. Sadly, they can also cause massive amounts of damage to fruit crops in the autumn. There are a number of deaths from wasp stings every year.

Will a wasp nest die out if I leave it untreated?Wasp nests are made of a paper mâché material, originally created by the Queen. These nests are then maintained by workers as the Queen focusses on birthing new grubs. Once the nest has produced new Queens for the next year it will eventually die off and will not be re-used by another colony of wasps.

Treatment of wasps

Our technicians will use a residual insecticide spray to treat the entrance of the nest and as the wasps return they will take this insecticide further in to the nest helping to kill it off. For the first few hours after treatment the wasps will be in a hyperactive state and we recommend keeping pets and children away from a nest site until this activity has dropped. When the nest is dead you can choose to remove the nest and dispose of it but it can be left where it is as once dead it will not be used again.
