Celebrating the Importance of Bees

World Bee Day takes place on the 20th May each year to celebrate the importance of bees.

Why are bees so important?

Flowering plants need pollination to reproduce which is vital for our food supply, not just for the food we eat but to feed other animals in the food chain. Bees are the most effective and prolific pollinators. They transfer pollen from flower to flower as they collect nectar and pollen. Approximately one third of the human food supply globally depends on pollination by bees. And it’s estimated that it would cost UK farmers an incredible £1.8billion per year to manually pollinate their crops.

However, bees can become a nuisance

Bees are active from spring throughout summer until late autumn. They can become agitated or aggressive for many reasons such as a lack of nectar, infestation by mites, poor weather, noise or other disruptions to their nest.

Honey bees often nest in chimneys, roof spaces and other cavities. Their colonies consist of thousands of bees which can be very noisy. Also they can find their way into places inside a property where they’re not welcome. And they often swarm for several days whilst looking for a new nest site which can be very inconvenient. Tree bumblebees are a recent addition to the UK from mainland Europe and have much smaller colonies of up to 300 bees. They nest in bird boxes, roof spaces and under roof tiles and can be noisy and become agitated if disturbed.

If you need to remove bees from your property

Attempting to remove bees yourself can prove dangerous and ineffective. You risk getting stung, and if an exit point from a nest is blocked, bees may find their way inside your property. PESTUK’s technician will relocate the bees by collecting the queen and allowing the swarm to follow so the bees can be taken to a more convenient location.
