High Wycombe is a large town in Buckinghamshire (South Bucks). This town was formerly called Chepping Wycombe or Chipping Wycombe until 1946. In the 2001 census the town had a population of 92300. High Wycombe is an Industrial and market town. A market has been held in the town since the Middle Ages. High Wycombe was a mill town in Medieval and Tudor times manufacturing lace and linen.  There was a paper industry present in the 17th and 18th century in High Wycombe. The River Wye is rich in chalk which made it ideal for paper bleaching. The most famous industry was the manufacturing of furniture.

In the 1920’s many of the towns slums were cleared. Some areas (Newlands was one) were considered unfit for human habitation with sewage running down the streets. From 1940 to 1968 High Wycombe was the centre for the RAF Bomber Command and from 1942 to 1945 the U.S. Army Air force 8th Bomber Command was based at a former Girl’s School. In the 1960’s the town centre was re developed.

Although situated in one of the most affluent parts of the country, High Wycombe contains some considerably deprived areas. In 2007, a survey ranked the Wycombe district as the 4th dirtiest in the South East and the 26th dirtiest in the whole of England. The survey found litter on 28.5% of streets and highways.  The town is undergoing major redevelopment, including development of the town's existing shopping centre, completion of the new Eden Shopping Centre.
The population is made up from many ethnic groups the largest of which is Asian with 16% of the population.
