Watford is a town and borough in Hertfordshire, 15 miles northwest of Central London. It became an urban district under the local government act 1894, and a municipal borough by grant of a charter in 1922. The borough is separated from Greater London by the parish of Watford Rural to the south in the three rivers district. The local authority is Watford Borough Council.
History
In the 16th Century the town developed on land by the River Colne that belonged to St Albans Abbey. In the 12th century a charter was granted allowing the building of St Mary’s church and a market.
Connections to the Grand Junction Canal and to the London and Birmingham Railway helped the town to grow with paper making mills, like John Dickinson and Co.
Economy
A major regional centre in the home counties, Watford and Stevenage are designated as major sub-regional centres by Hertfordshire County Council. The High Street has a large number of bars, clubs and restaurants. Harlequin Shopping Centre is the major shopping area, a purpose built indoor mall of 140 shops, cafes and restaurants. Opened in 1992, it was rebranded by the owners in 2013 as into Watford Shopping Centre.
Several companies have their head offices in Watford. This includes Mothercare, J D Wetherspoon and Bathstore.
Culture and Community
There are 2 theatres in Watford, and a number of museums. The Watford Palace Theatre presents world premieres, dance, family shows and annual pantomime. The Edwardian building opened in 1908 and sits 600.
Watford Colosseum, built in 1938, originally as the Watford Town Hall by Charles CowlesVoysey. The Colosseum has a worldwide reputation for its fine acoustics. The site has been used to record a number of film soundtracks such The Lord of The Rings and The Sound of Music. There are 43 public parks, gardens and recreation grounds in Watford.
