Thatcham is listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the strongest claimant to the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Britain. The well-preserved remains of a Mesolithic settlement dating from 7,700 BC have been found in its vicinity. There is also evidence of Bronze and Iron Age settlements and of a Roman town.
The Town has some fantastic places to walk such as Greenham Common which connects Thatcham to Newbury. The common is a former RAF station in Berkshire but now inhabits many animals such as wild horses and cows to name just a few. Thatcham also has ‘The Nature Discovery Centre’ which provides an adventure playground, lakeside walks and interactive wildlife displays.
Thatcham has a weekly farmers market on a Friday which allows the locals to purchase goods from nearby farms and households. The centre of Thatcham is called The Broadway where you will find the weekly farmers market but also several independent shops, restaurants and supermarkets.
The town has a football club called Thatcham Town Football Club which was founded in 1894 and they play in the Southern League Division One Central.
There is also a Cricket Club who play in the Thames Valley League, the Berkshire League and the Borders Sunday League.
