Northampton is formally in the East Midlands region but is also referred to in Government planning as being part of the South Midlands “growth area”. The town is 30 miles (48 km) south-southeast of Leicester, 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Milton Keynes, 43 miles (69 km) west of Cambridge, 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Oxford and the same distance southwest of Peterborough.

Northampton is subdivided into suburbs, council wards, constituencies, ecclesiastical parishes, and other less formal areas.

There are 33 electoral wards, as defined by the borough council (the county council divides the town into much larger wards which have different boundaries), in Northampton:

  1. Abington
  2. Billing
  3. Boothville
  4. Brookside
  5. Castle
  6. Delapré and Briar Hill
  7. East Hunsbury
  8. Eastfield
  9. Headlands
  10. Kings Heath
  11. Kingsley
  12. Kingsthorpe
  13. Nene Valley
  14. New Duston
  15. Obelisk
  16. Old Duston
  17. Park
  18. Parklands
  19. Phippsville
  20. Rectory Farm
  21. Riverside
  22. Rushmills
  23. Semilong
  24. Spencer
  25. Spring Park
  26. St David’s
  27. St James
  28. Sunnyside
  29. Talavera
  30. Trinity
  31. Upton
  32. West Hunsbury
  33. Westone

The most northern wards make up the Northampton North parliamentary constituency; the most southern make up the Northampton South parliamentary constituency. However, East Hunsbury, West Hunsbury and Nene Valley are included in the South Northamptonshire parliamentary constituency.

Nine registered parish councils also lie within the borough of Northampton. These are Billing, Collingtree, Duston, Great Houghton, Hardingstone, Hunsbury Meadow, Upton, West Hunsbury and Wootton & East Hunsbury. There are also settlements outside the town boundaries that are sometimes considered suburbs of Northampton, including Boughton, Cogenhoe, Ecton, Grange Park, Harpole, Little Houghton, Moulton, Overstone and Rothersthorpe.
