Northampton is a town in the East Midlands situated on the River Nene. It originated in 1100 as a walled town with a castle, and was granted its first charter in 1189. The town walls and castle were demolished during the Restoration in 1660 after the English Civil Wars because Northampton had sided with Parliament and against the king. Much of the town was destroyed by fire in 1675 and rebuilt during the 18th and 19th centuries. Northampton was designated a planned new town in 1965 and expansion followed.
Northampton is known for its shoe and leather industry which started in the 15th century. The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery houses the largest collection of shoe heritage in the world; somewhere upwards of 15,000 pairs or single shoes. The museum first opened its doors in 1865 and began collecting notable footwear during the 1870s. The National Leather Collection was founded in 1946 and is currently located in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre. It is the world’s largest and most diverse resource for the subject of leather.
78 Derngate is the only house in England designed and remodelled by architect by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1916, and has been meticulously restored and is now open to the public.
Northampton’s oldest park, Abington Park, was first opened to the public in 1897. It’s situated on the site of the medieval village of Abington and has a 16th-century manor house at its centre which was once home to Elizabeth Bernard, granddaughter of William Shakespeare. It opened as Abington Park Museum in 1899 and houses local history and fashion exhibits.
