Ladybirds:

At PEST UK we are having many enquiries abut Ladybirds. These are always the Harlequin Ladybirds. No one ever complains about the native English Ladybird!
Harlequin Ladybirds
First Harlequin Ladybirds are fairly new to pest control. They originally come from Asia and were introduced to Europe and North America to control Aphids on crops. It is called Harlequin because it comes in many colours but in the UK most seem to look the same as the native Ladybird but larger. They are extremely successful and have spread worldwide to all continents except Australia and Antarctica. Large numbers hibernating in cavities can give off a smell and they even bite!

Pest Control Treatment for Harlequin Ladybirds

This is usually a combination of ‘fogging’ accessible voids with an insecticide fog applied with a fogging machine or fogger. This is accompanied by a residual insecticide spray. Any pest control treatments will reduce, not eliminate the problem as often only the periphery of the infestation is accessible to treat. In many cases the bulk of the hibernating population may be deep in cavity walls or boxed in voids. Once a site is chosen ladybirds will come back year after year to the same site. As well as problems as they go into hibernate often the pest problem is repeated in the Spring when the Harlequin Ladybirds come out of hibernation.
