Honey bee swarms

PESTUK technicians are called out more and more as the year gets warmer for bees. Chimneys, extractor fans, sheds can all house honey bee swarms. They will also hang from trees or walls. There are over 200 types of bees here in the UK alone. A swarm happens when part of a hive splits. This will cause the queen, accompanied by drones and several thousand workers to look for a new nest site. While scout bees are looking for a suitable site the swarm may hang for a few days in a tree or bush.

Honey bee swarms

One of our technicians found this honey bee swarm in a customers home and successfully has moved them on.

What do we do with bees?

Upon arrival the technician will attempt to collect the bees into a box. Wearing a beekeeper suit the technician will approach the swarm and will coax them into a box or bag. With the queen collected the rest of the swarm will follow and relocated away from the area. Some of our technicians are friends with local bee keepers and will arrange to meet them to collect the swarm for use.

If however the bees are in an area that is dangerous and/or removal is not possible then a treatment with insecticide will be the only measure left.
