Getting Bitten

In Pests

When people get bitten by insects they want to know what it is that is biting them. In the vast majority of cases it is quite easy to find out and treat the cause of what insect is biting the person.

Who is Getting Bitten?

In a lot of cases only certain individuals may be getting bitten even when sharing the same bed. There are two schools of thought on this, first that the insects prefer one sex (usually preferring women) and the other is that not every one reacts in the same way (some not at all) to insect bites. The ‘itch’, swelling and raised well is caused by the chemical the insect injects into the hole in the skin while feeding to prevent clotting. It is this that causes the ‘bite’.

Bed Bugs

If people are getting bitten by bed bugs then this will occur at night, in rooms where people sleep or at present for long periods at night. Bed Bugs are very hard to eradicate (see the PEST UK Bed Bug page for further information). Bites are often spread over the body but often on areas of the body that stick out the bed at night. Bed Bugs are rarely seen and only come out at night as long as carbon dioxide and warmth are present.

Fleas

Usually associated with pets (cats are the worst culprits) including dogs, rabbits, birds and hedgehogs. Bites in adults are normally (except for young children) restricted to the lower legs. Fleas live in carpets, cracks in skirting, floorboards and soft furnishings. They are occasionally seen jumping. Specialist Flea Removal from PESTUK
