Wikipedia Basingstoke & DeaneBasingstoke & Deane Council offer a free pest control service to residents in their catchment area for rats only to domestic customers over 60 years old or in receipt of income support and/or housing benefit. They do not offer any other type of pest control service such as the treatment for wasp or bee nests, ants, cockroaches, bed bugs, mice, squirrels, rabbits, fleas etc. So if you have a pest control problem and unless it is a rat infestation and you meet their criteria you will have to get a privater pest control contractor.

The Basingstoke and Deane Council pest control page directs the user to yell.com or the the Buy With Confidence Scheme. I think they are making a mistake in doing this. First there is no guarantee that the residents won’t get ripped of if they go for a company that advertise on yell.com. Not all companies that advertise on yell.com are bad but some are (we advertise on yell.com, so there is no issue with us have an ulterior motive in this respect) but there is no safe guard as there is if the Basingstoke & Deane Council recommended a British Pest Control Association Member (the BPCA). Members of the BPCA are strictly vetted and have are inspected on a regular basis to check that all technicians are fully trained (this includes on going refresher courses etc), the company has full insurance, their vehicles and safety systems are in order and that technicians are CRB checked. The BPCA will also handle any complaints made by customers about their members. The Basingstoke & Deane Council’s customers will get none of this with yell.com.

The other organisation they direct their pest control customers to is the Buy With Confidence Scheme. This does vet its members but not in pest control. The vetting procedure is really just checking how the company operates, not the expertise or the quality of the service. PEST UK is a member of this scheme.
