Hounslow Council’s pest control department (which covers Feltham, Twickenham, Richmond, Teddington, Brentwood, Ashford, Staines on Thames, Egham, Sunbury, Heathrow and Stanwell) are more expensive than PEST UK’s charges for all pest control.
There is also no consistency in pricing, I can’t understand for example why Hounslow Council Pest Control Department charge more for mice than for rats and more for fleas than for garden ants. I can’t understand why councils charge so much, they have far less overheads than private companies. They have more buying power than smaller private pest control companies, so they get cheaper vans and equipment, no advertising costs as most of the prospective customers go straight to the council pest control website yet still they charge well above the ‘normal’ rate that private companies would charge to make a profit. Either this council is ripping off the people they are meant to look after and/or they are grossly inefficient. Most private companies not only offer a more cost effective pest control service but also a superior service in many ways. For a start at PEST UK we operate a same day service 7 days a week including Bank Holidays. We supply half hour or one hour time slots for appointments (not just afternoon or evening, although Hounslow Council’s Pest Control Service only work up to 4pm where as PEST UK have appointments from 7am to 7pm. All our treatments are guaranteed (providing advice on proofing and hygiene are adhered to) and as the technicians are only paid on results they ensure that the pest problem will be eliminated.
If the public only knew that it is poor value in service and price to call Hounslow Council, instead the public would be better served calling a private pest control company that is a member of the British Pest Control Association, this is the government recognised body that represents pest control in the UK and strictly vets it’s members before they join and on an ongoing basis for training, insurance, work practices and CRB checks. PEST UK is a full BPCA member.

Several rodent and insect charges for pest control charged by High Wycombe Council’s pest control Department are much higher than those of PEST UK. High Wycombe Council use a private contractor to do their pest control called SDK or Dial a Pest. This was a cleaning company from Devon that branched out into Local Authority Pest Control. One of our technicians (Jim Dunn) used to work for this company.
Even as a private company they seem to operate ‘the council way’. For example they only operate Monday to Friday and only work up to 5pm. In fact when an appointment is given they will only say between 8am and 1pm or 12 to 5pm. They also do not operate a same day service. if some one phones PEST UK today they will be given a slot of say 17-18.00 which will be kept to or we will ring the customer to keep them informed if we happen to run late for any reason. PEST UK operate 7 days a week (including Bank Holidays). The last appointments can be as late as 19.00 hrs and as early as 7 am. We understand at PEST UK that people have work and home commitments so will work around those. We also understand that an emergency needs attending straight away so we make sure we have enough staff to enable us to do this. What is the point of a council letting a company like this take over?
They offer a poor quality service when compared with other private companies but are not particularly cheap. There is no point in the council doing this. It should just send prospective customers to the British Pest Control Association website where they will be supplied with several companies, all of which have to be insured, have trained staff, crb checked and abide by the British Pest Control Association’s code of conduct.

Harrow Council state on their website:
‘Harrow council’s pest control charges remain highly competitive and have been benchmarked against other London councils.’ This may be true ‘against other London councils’ but why would anyone pay these prices when you can get a far superior service from a private company like PEST UK. Harrow Council don’t even guarantee their work. They won’t give fixed visiting times. They won’t work evenings, week ends and Bank Holidays (PEST UK operate 7 days a week, including bank Holidays). Harrow Council Pest Control Department are ripping off the people they are meant to represent. Why are they allowed to get away with this?
The problem is that often people don’t know that nowadays there are many private pest control companies competing for work. Choose a British Pest Control Association member and you will get a fully trained technician, CRB checked, fully insured and then an organisation to fall back on should there be any problems. The public trusts their own local council not to rip them off but in most cases this is plainly not true. They are charging above commercial rates for a poor service. Harrow Council Pest Control don’t even pay for any advertising fees, private companies like PEST UK pay thousands of pounds every year. This money that they don’t spend goes straight in the council’s pocket.
The fairest way would be to direct prospective customers to the British Pest Control Association website. On this site is a section called ‘Find a Pest Controller’ where the customer puts their postcode in the web site and then are given several BPCA members to choose from. The council would then not be making money out of the people they represent but also protecting their residents from the many cowboy pest control companies operating.

Guildford Council Pest Control Prices:
Guildford Council use SDK or Dial a Pest (same company) as a ‘Preferred Supplier’ and as the company that carries out their pest control. This company (SDK/Dial a Pest) started as a cleaning company in Devon and then branched out into pest control. They ‘specialise’ in working for councils, not always successfully however as they lost their contract they had a few years back with West Berkshire Council. West Berks Council now point prospective customers to the British Pest Control Association web site. This in my opinion is the way all councils should go. It offers a selection of vetted, skilled companies all competing for custom. There are no cowboy companies within the BPCA membership as they can’t operate with the strict BPCA guidelines and would soon be asked to leave. Companies who don’t have to compete for their customers often don’t offer a good service and people don’t realise that they can often get an independent company (like PEST UK who operate 7 days a week including Bank Holidays, offer guaranteed treatments and half hour booking slots from 8am to 7pm as well as phoning in advance) cheaper offering a superior service. If you can get through on the phone to Guildford Council Pest Control Department (SDK or ‘Dial a Pest’then expect a wait to book an appointment (this can take over a week in the Summer or any holiday period) and you will not get an hours slot appointment time as you would get with PEST UK.
Below is an example of the prices that SDK/Dial a Pest charge on behalf of Guildford Council for their pest control.
The conclusion is for a quality pest control service don’t use a local council or a private company working on the councils behalf use a BPCA register company that only succeeds because it offers customers what they want. As the saying goes ‘You get what you pay for’.

Pest Control in Bracknell
PEST UK has recently opened a pest control office in Bracknell. Although we have covered this area since PEST UK started in 1989 it is only recently that an office has been opened. PEST UK has offices in the neighbouring towns of Wokingham, Ascot, Camberley, Reading and Windsor. Our longest serving pest control technician, Steve Tiller is in charge of the Bracknell Pest Control Office. PEST UK already has some large pest control contract customers in the Bracknell area, including Syngenta. Point Leisure, Bracknell Ambulance Station, Bracknell Self Storage. Balti King, Beechcraft Court (Hanover Housing), Best Kebab and TK Water Systems. Most of Bracknell is made of modern buildings so doesn’t suffer as much as some of PEST UK coverage areas that have pest control problems associated with old buildings and sewer systems as well as high population density.
The reason that PEST UK has targeted Bracknell for more pest control work is that the council (Bracknell Forest) has extremely high prices for some of their pest control services. Examples of this listed below:
This really an example of a council ripping off the residents they are supposed to support. If a commercial company like PEST UK can provide a superior service at a much cheaper price then why, if Bracknell Forest Council can’t at least match it are they providing this service? people trust their local council and don’t expect to be ripped off.
Don’t be fooled, phone PEST UK on 0330 100 2811, we provide timed appointments, guaranteed treatments and a 7 day service.
PEST UK have been offering pest control in Harrow for just over a year. During this time there have been an abundance of Bed Bugs, rats and mice as well as other pests such as wasps, bees, cockroaches, squirrels and ants. We have also started gaining food premise pest control contracts in the Harrow area. Recently we have been doing major pest proofing for Ladbrokes who have a large office in Harrow. Our business is helped by the fact that the Local Council charge a great deal for providing a pest control service, in most cases they are far more expensive than PEST UK and as well as being more expensive in our and more importantly our customers opinion we provide a far superior service.Pest control contracts gained this month (May) were at St Bernadette Catholic School Clifton Road Harrow HA3 9NS and Eastcote Convenience Store 328 Eastcote Lane South Harrow HA2 9AJ. Kenneth is PEST UK’s representative in Harrow. He lives in Harrow and runs the Harrow Office. He is a highly experienced technician who specialises in rodent and insect proofing which as there are many flats, terraced houses and Maisonettes in Harrow is very appropriate for the area. In some cases proofing buildings from the inside is the only way to prevent rodents gaining access into buildings, especially when not all outside areas of the building can be accessed. Harrow is a suburb of London and id densely populated with a large amount of food and take away food premises. The sewer systems are also quite old. All these factors lead to a high incidences of pest control problems, including rats, mice, bed bugs, cockroaches, ants and other pests.
PEST UK operate 7 days a week so if you have any pest control problems then please call PEST UK anytime on 0330 100 2811
