Slough Borough Council use a sub contractor called SDK to deal with pest control problems. They are also trade under the name of ‘Dial A Pest’. This company started as a cleaning company based in Devon that ‘expanded’ into pest control but concentrating in local authority pest control. There have been varying reports on the quality of the service of this company. I must admit that we really only hear of the bad experiences people have of this company as we are usually called upon by previous customers of this company to sort out problems that they have been unable to solve. These have included rat problems including sewer, hygiene and proofing issues as well as wasp and bee nests where access or other problems have meant that the SDK or Dial A Pest Pest Control Technician has been unable or unwilling to deal with the problem. At PEST UK we offer guaranteed treatments with the technician being responsible for the success (or failure!) of the job carried out. If there is a problem then we will sort it out. PEST UK is solely a pest control company, unlike SDK the pest control service is not a ‘bolt on’, we just do and are experts in all aspects of pest control. We are slightly more expensive than SDK but no one subsidised our service but pest control is important and should not be left to people who don’t care or don’t guarantee their work.

Slough Borough Council’s Pest Control Prices for Commercial Premises

These are sky high and reflect what the pest control service really costs (& how efficient the pest control service actually is). Prices for rats, mice, wasp nests, bees, ants, cockroaches etc all exceed what PEST UK charge by large amounts. Slough Borough Council do not list many pests, such as Squirrels, Glis Glis, Rabbits, Foxes or Moles.

Basingstoke & Deane offer a subsidised service only for rats and only for people on income support related benefits. Everybody else is directed via a web ling to The Yellow Pages web site or to the Buy with Confidence Scheme. First even though our company, PEST UK has a large presence on the Yellow Pages web site (also known as hub or yell.com) I do not believe that this is something a local council should advise their customers to do. Any company can advertise with this organisation. Unlike the Buy with Confidence scheme there is no vetting procedure. At PEST UK we are in the Buy With Confidence Scheme but we believe that the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) is a much safer and more pest control oriented site to direct people to. It also gives the customer far more choice than the buy With Confidence scheme.

From our experience at PEST UK advising customers to access pest control companies through a third party organisation like the BPCA is by far the best solution.

All the other Councils in the Berkshire, North Hampshire, Oxfordshire, South Bucks, West Surrey and Middlesex areas where the local council operates their own pest control service has lead to, in some cases an over priced service (especially in the London areas) and often a poor service either carried out by the council themselves or their ‘appointed contractor’. This is mainly that if the pest controller works directly for the council or the pest control company has a long term contract with the council then they don’t really have to try that hard. They also normally have a fixed number of staff which leaves them unable to deal with the many fluctuations in the numbers of pest control jobs required which in turn soils the council pest controls reputation as people will say, “they charge a great deal of money, can’t stick to a time and there is a waiting list of several days”.

Private companies have the flexibility to deal with these fluctuations by employing more (fully trained, in the case of PEST UK) and/or extending working hours and having more staff working at weekends etc.

West Berkshire Council don’t carry out pest control services directly for domestic or commercial properties. Instead they advise visitors to the West Berks Council Pest Control section on their web site to go (there is a web link) to the British Pest Control Association web site where they will be given a choice of several British Pest Control Association members to choose from. From our experience at PEST UK this is by far the best solution. The site where customers of West Berkshire Council Pest Control to (the British Pest Control Association) is an organisation that companies can only join after they have undergone a very strict vetting process which is ongoing. It also gives the customer an avenue to complain if they feel unsatisfied with the service. Complaining direct to a local council can be frustrating.
